After writing the blog, Gonna Build a Boat in the Sand, I decided to look up flood stories from across the world and learned that there are more than five hundred different tales of a massive flood and the few people who survived it. Places like India, China, Wales, Russia, Hawaii, Australia, Scandinavia and here, in the continental United States. The most interesting thing is that they all include a warning of the flood, building a big boat, saving animals, and a family, as well as releasing birds to see if the water had subsided. To me, it seems that the stories all came from the same source but in the retelling over centuries some of the minor details changed. The flood story in the Epic of Gilgamesh, when compared to the Biblical account, is fundamentally the same story.
It is obvious that a cataclysmic flood event took place. When the people who knew that it had actually occurred were scattered from Babel, when God confused the languages after the flood, the story went with them. It became folklore to the peoples that left the plain of Shinar. Today, many people are calling it a myth. Some try to downplay it and say it was just a regional event. But the fact that every people group across the globe has such a story in their folklore tells me that it is not a myth. Where there is smoke, there is fire. There is a lot of “smoke” here. It seems impossible for virtually the same story to develop in cultures a world apart.
Besides the Epic of Gilgamesh, one tale from Hawaii tells of a man named Nu-u. He built a boat, saved all the animals and his family. Nu-u – Noah? Then another tale from China tells of a man named Fuhi, his wife and three sons escaped the flood and repopulated the earth. The Smithsonian magazine published an article that speculates that the flood was only in the Mediterranean area, citing evidence in the area from sediment cores taken around the Black Sea area and imagining that the melting of glacial ice caused the flooding. The sad part is that they are trying to disprove a global flood in favor of a flood in a specific area. They have a theory and are trying to force the evidence to prove it.
Evidence of a global flood is everywhere. There is a website called Evolutionisamyth.com that says that fossils have been found on tops of some of the highest mountains. These are from creatures that never roamed those mountains. I have read of fossilized sea creatures on mountain tops, tropical leaves found in ice and aquatic animal fossils found in deserts. There are cities beneath the seas where they shouldn’t be. The sedimentary rock that can be seen in the Grand Canyon and other similar places give evidence of sediment layers that formed very quickly. The evidence is in the fairly flat form of the layers of rock. This is not local to just the Grand Canyon but is also in similar canyons and cliffs all over the world. The sediment layers are the same or similar.
Have you ever put a shovel full of dirt, sand and gravel into a glass jar with water and shook it? When you set it down the gravel, dirt and sand begin to settle at different rates, forming layers. This is what occurred during the flood. The soil, all over the earth was washed away, and mixed into the waters from beneath the earth and the rain from above. Please understand that the flood was not a gentle event. After 40 days of torrential rain, this muddied water began to settle all over the planet. Layer after layer forming the stone that is the beauty of places like the Grand Canyon and give testimony to that event.
Science says that once, all land was formed into one continent. How did it breakup and spread apart as they tell us it did? What started the movement? How did the tectonic plates break apart and move the continents to where they are now? Was it a gradual shift over millions of years? Or did a cataclysmic event like the flood, with the earth shattered as fountains of water shooting upward broke it apart some 6000 years ago, give or take a century or three? Or did that single continent even exist at all?
Science, most often, will see only what it wants to see and will try to explain it from an evolutionary, millions of years scenario. It takes a theory and force nature and other physical evidence to confirm that theory. Like the Theory of Evolution, which is still an unproven theory to this day. But more and more, things are being discovered, uncovered, and deciphered that prove the Bible is true. I am not saying that scientists are entirely wrong. They’re not entirely wrong but neither are they entirely right. However, sometimes, they are entirely blind to the evidence right in front of them. They want to explain it in millions of years, without God, without His active participation in creation and the events of the flood as well as His active participation in the events and with people of our world today.
